After pregnancy or weight loss, many patients are unable to eliminate the damaged excess skin and fat of the abdominal wall. Very often, stretch marks are present which indicate damaged elastic fibers in the skin from being overstretched. Often, the underlying muscles are stretched apart and have lost their tightness. Despite vigorous exercise, many patients are unable to correct the appearance of the abdominal wall, because of the damaged elastic fibers and the malposition of the muscles. Fortunately, these patients may be able to eliminate excess fat and skin by undergoing a tummy tuck.
